CHINA BRIEF | Oppo partners with Mexican telecom giant América Móvil, expanding in Latin America

Oppo, the world’s fifth largest smartphone vendor, has seen sales drop 15.9% year-on-year in the second quarter to 28 million. 

Chinese smartphone vendor Oppo today announced in a release on August 27 its partnership with América Móvil, the largest telecom carrier in Latin America, which will see Oppo’s offerings available in Mexico and other Latin American countries through the telecom company’s subsidiaries Telel and Claro.

“Oppo is pleased to launch strategic cooperation with América Móvil, which will allow local consumers to have a better-quality communication experience,” Alen Wu, Oppo’s president of global sales. Currently, OPPO has formed partnerships with over 80 network operators around the world in its global push.

Global smartphone sales fell by 20.4% in the second quarter of 2020 to 295 million units, per data from advisory firm Gartner. Oppo ranked the fifth biggest smartphone brand worldwide in terms of sales, with an 8% market share, following Samsung, Huawei, Apple, and Xiaomi. Its sales dropped 15.9% year-on-year in the second quarter to 28 million.
