Almost half of the Chinese netizen population, or about 490 million customers, had ordered food online in 2020.

The convenience of food delivery has been great for consumers, but the benefits brought by delivery platforms come at a cost to restaurants, workers, and even for the customers themselves.

According to research and analysis firm Statista, the estimated value of the global online food delivery market will reach USD 154.3 billion by 2023, up from USD 111.3 billion in 2020. Although the food industry suffered a dip in business resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, restaurants leaned into online food delivery platforms in order to bring in revenue.
